Technology Evaluation and Demonstration

Procure equipment and setup microgrid and cyber testbed.

NEPTUNE 2.0: Plastics Micro-factory

The evaluation and demonstration of a plastic recycling micro-factory for localized product manufacturing of commonplace goods and supplies.

  • Design of manufacturing system to process and construct materials from recycled plastics from MCAS Miramar Waste Streams.
  • System design and analysis of power systems required to operate micro-factory, isolated from the electric utility.
  • Demonstration of MVP for micro-factory at ASU facilities.

Advancing Modern Power through Utility Partnerships (AmpUp)

Global Energy Access

5 year USAID cooperation agreement to address energy sector challenges through collaboration and innovation.

County of Hawaii policy guidance

Grid Modernization

Consulting with the County of Hawaii R&D department on matters in the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, in an effort to analyze and advocate for renewable portfolio standards (RPS) and lower energy prices for Hawaiian utilities.

  • Monitoring of Integrated Grid Planning for Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) to develop a RPS for net zero carbon production by 2045.
  • Monitoring of Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) for Hawaii Gas Company to support the state transition to net-zero carbon by 2045.
  • Collaboration with the Global Futures Laboratory at ASU to observe Performance-Based Rates dockets and others.

Effects of Electric Vehicle Adoption on Utility Operations and Revenue Models

Grid Modernization

Analysis of SRP rate structures and their impact on customer costs, utility revenue, and electric distribution systems following the wide-scale adoption of residential electric vehicles (EVs).

  • Managed charging of EVs should have a significant impact on outcomes for customers and the utility company, which is primarily driven by pricing signals to customers through their rate plans.
  • The changes in customer behavior based on their rate structure has an impact on the peak demand for the utility, resulting in needs for costly upgrades to system infrastructure.
  • This project analyzes the impact to customer costs, utility revenue, and distribution system loading from the adoption of residential EVs. Additionally, the relationship to managed charging from rate structures is considered.

AmpUp FY23: Circular Economy

Global Energy Access

Create white paper with framework for circular economy of transformers and electric meters in developing countries.

High-Resolution Metering & State Estimation for Low-Cost Real-Time Awareness and Improved Microgrid Design

Grid Modernization

Efforts to utilize high resolution, low-cost metering to feed data into distribution state estimation for system awareness.

SE4All: Madagascar Integrated Energy Planning

Global Energy Access

Clean cooking analysis component of integrated energy plan to provide clean and affordable energy access to all in Madagascar by 2030.

NEPTUNE 2.0: Coordinated Assets Control and Communication in a Distributed Host Nation Microgrid System

Grid Modernization

Provide low-cost coordinated microgrid solutions that connect to host nation power architecture and offset a significant portion of the fuel required in a conventional diesel generator-driven platform.

A minimum viable product will be demonstrated including control and asset management of a distributed microgrid that complies with the emerging tactical microgrid standard (TMS) and is connected to a host nation power grid. Physical testing will be completed at the Arizona State University Microgrid Test bed using power-hardware-in-the-loop to represent a forward operating base microgrid connected to a host nation distribution network.

USTDA: Accelerating Solar Mini-grid Deployment in Fiji

Global Energy Access

Accelerating electrification of communities in Fiji through mini-grid feasibility assessments.

  • Remote assessment of over 300 un-electrified communities in Fiji.
  • Development of tenders for 75 mini-grid sites for rural electrification.

NEPTUNE: Electric Vehicle Fleets

Grid Modernization

In order to comply with Presidential Executive Order 14057 for federal electric vehicle adoption, military installation energy managers require EV management systems and business models to make them technically and economically feasible.

  • Design of agreements for third-party EV charging O&M models on military bases can facilitate widescale adoption for POV and GOV charging, and analysis is needed to show their financial impact on government budgets
  • Bi-directional charging of government-owned EVs can have a significant impact on islanded resilience for military microgrids when unexpected electric utility outages occur.
